Mich Sampson: Bio

Based in London, Mich has a busy life filled with singing, teaching, and leading choirs. She feels incredibly lucky to be able to combine work with pleasure!

Singing

Since graduating with a first class BMus from Roehampton University, Mich's warm alto voice is most often heard performing classical works (especially oratorio), Jewish music (as cantor at Beit Klal Yisrael, and at weddings), light opera, and folk. She is a confident sight-reader and a reliable, unpretentious addition to any choir.

As a singer-pianist and songwriter, Mich has been guest of honour at filk [sic] conventions in Atlanta and the UK and shortlisted for the international 'Best Performer' Pegasus award five times. Her deft piano and vocals have been described as Tori Amos meets Joni Mitchell with a splash of Yiddish. Mich's debut album 'Just Beyond' has raised over £1000 for Cancer Research UK.

Mich also performs regularly with Marilisa Valtazanou (guitar, voice, and many other instruments) as Playing Rapunzel, a gentle and humorous folk duo who share songs of story and myth. Playing Rapunzel released their first album 'Abseiling for Beginners' in 2009.

Teaching

Mich teaches choral singing and musicianship at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA), as well as giving private lessons in piano, singing, and music theory.

As a choir director, she has worked with groups such as Roehampton University Chorus and the Chapel End Savoy Players, and in 2010-11 she will be working with Neil Ferris at Wimbledon Choral Society (courtesy of an apprenceship from the Association of British Choral Directors).

Mich is keen to support progressive synagogue music-making, and is running a Jewish training choir for new and developing singers from October 2010.
